Back Pain
“Being treated by Jann really made a difference to me. After being in a car accident I suffered from neck and back pain and continuously seeing’physios’and still nothing helped. Passing by Jann's practice I thought I’d give acupuncture ago. Little did I know that it would really help me with my pain. After a session I felt relieved.”

Chronic Chest Infection
“Last year I had bronchitis caused by golden staph infection in my lungs. After two courses of antibiotics my doctor gave up and encouraged me to try acupuncture. Jann decided that golden staph indicated a compromised immune system and sent me for hair analysis to find out why. The results showed high mercury levels. She treated me with acupuncture and chelation therapy - lots of vitamins and minerals. The second hair analysis shows a definite lowering of mercury levels.”

Bruce
Rozelle
When Bruce came to see me he was very sick with a chronic chest infection. I treated him with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine immediately and his chest infection totally cleared up within the next two weeks. I suspected that the weakness of his immune system was due to chemical or heavy metal poisoning. His pulse from a Chinese medicine diagnostic point of view was choppy and wiry which is a good indicator of chemical poisoning. I find hair analysis is a useful diagnostic tool.

Cystitis

“I developed cystitis at age 21 and suffered recurring bouts almost monthly. This was debilitating and depressing. Doctors prescribed antibiotics which stopped the infection but did not relieve the pressure which made the wearing of clothing above or on my pelvis most uncomfortable. I also noticed that the infection weakened my bladder. When the infection was very bad I passed blood and my kidneys throbbed. I sought the help of Jann Mehmet. Jann believed that the cystitis was stress-related. I realised that the times when I was feeling stressed, I would develop the infection. Jann treated me with Chinese herbs and above all with wonderful acupuncture which relieved the horrible pressure. This year I've had a particularly stressful period. And yet suffer greatly reduced amounts of infections and am stronger and healthier than ever.”

“I have been a patient of Jann Mehmet for several years. During this time I have found my overall health to have improved enormously. I am much more in touch with my body and can feel if things are starting to get out of balance. This gives me the opportunity to ‘prevent’illness.

I used to suffer with cystitis-it would just ‘come on’and was quite chronic at times. Jann has treated me for this complaint using herbs and acupuncture with wonderful success. Nowadays, I rarely get cystitis but if I start to feel the symptoms I take the herbs that Jann prescribed and within a very short space of time the discomfort has subsided. I usually carry on with the herbs for a few days or two and if possible have a treatment and get the ‘all clear’from Jann.

Cystitis can be a distressing and painful experience, but knowing I have help on hand that works (if needed) is a great comfort.”

Digestive Problems

“Since I can remember, I have always been a sufferer of stomach upsets. The usual symptoms were: almost daily diarrhoea, heartburn, bowel pain, sensitivity to almost all kinds of foods. Having a meal was a real challenge and all the diets that I followed and all the medicine that I took did not help. At most, I was feeling a bit better during the period of time I was on a diet, but immediately after, the problems started again.

Some months ago after receiving advice from my beautiful wife, I went to see Jann. I started acupuncture treatment accompanied by Chinese traditional medicine. Immediately after the treatment the improvement in my health was noticeable. After a couple of months there were no more stomach pains, diarrhoea, and no heartburn. I started to enjoy my meals again and there is no food now that I am sensitive to. The transformation is so complete that two weeks ago I stopped seeing Jann because my health now does not require any treatment.“

Infertility

After trying unsuccessfully to conceive for 18 months, and going through the heartache of a failed IVF attempt, my husband and I sought the help of the fertility team at Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre. My confidence in our ability to conceive was renewed within my first visit, as Jann Mehmet's in-depth knowledge and holistic approach to our health was truly inspiring. Within the next few months we both saw Jann, Melissa or Leah for weekly acupuncture sessions. All three practitioners were very professional, genuine and committed and the environment provided was very calming and therapeutic. This, coupled with dietary changes, herbs and Jann's suggestion that we check my husband for varicocele (which was the case), turned our overall health around. Almost three months to the date of our first appointment with Jann, we naturally conceived our beautiful baby. I continued acupuncture throughout my pregnancy and found it highly beneficial. Not only have we been blessed with a healthy, happy child thanks to the treatment at the Rozelle Acupuncture Centre, but also we have both gained a greater knowledge of our overall health, have stronger immune system and feel years younger. Considering our IVF doctor told us that it could take us up to seven years to conceive naturally (if we conceived naturally at all), three months almost seems like a miracle! I cannot recommend Jann and her team highly enough t anyone looking into fertility issues, or any other health issues for that matter. I m now a wholehearted believer in acupuncture and Tradition Chinese Medicine as a brilliant, if not better, alternative to western medicine, and would myself choose this as my treatment of choice for an future heath issues.

Fiona
Sydney

It is worth adding that during the first consultation, I suggested Fiona's husband be checked for varicocele. We did find that he had a varicocele and we recommended embolisation followed by acupuncture as we have found that this treatment combination works better than embolisation alone. The systematic review conducted on the clinical trials to treat varicocele using embolisation or ligation found there was no evidence that these two procedures (ligation or embolisation) were beneficial. So combining acupuncture with emolisationt is a bit of a break through in treatment results. Within four weeks his abnormal semen quality/forms had improved significantly. His count had also doubled. While we found there was a significant feeling factor that had been overlooked, the improvement in Fiona's husbands semen quality also lead to a speedier result. We were all thrilled.

“I very much appreciated the way that Jann went about her evaluation and treatment of me. She did not immediately prescribe herbs but rather, started with changes to my diet and lifestyle along with acupuncture in order to first address my irregular cycles. My husband and I had been trying to fall pregnant for six months when I first went to Jann.

Under Jann I fell pregnant within three cycles. (And lost eight kilos!!!) Once pregnant, she treated me weekly for the first trimester, which I believe was crucial. I then attended every four weeks until term. My pregnancy was easy and enjoyable and it was during one of Jann’s treatments at 17 weeks that I first felt my baby move.”

Rebecca
Sydney

“From age 30 I had stopped using contraception in the hope of conceiving. I had no luck in the next six years. I knew that work stress was a big factor, so I gradually stepped back work to part-time and did some meditation, but I also came to the conclusion that I had some hormonal imbalances following my mother’s death when I turned 30. My cycles had become irregular lasting 3 months.

Aged 36 I sought help from a specialist, and was put on Chlomid, an entry-level fertility drug. Jann Mehmet was also giving me treatments by this time and she noted that the drug was stressing my system. I wasn’t particularly fit or healthy, but considering my age, I didn’t want to wait to ‘fix’that with her. This was a mistake, as was the decision to go on a four week European holiday later when I was 7 weeks pregnant. Jann was very concerned about my lack of preparation and health at conception. She recommended that it was unwise to fly in the first trimester.

After 7 months on Chlomed I was quite depleted. It was decided that I had elevated levels of Prolactin (great for breastfeeding, but inhibits ovulation), and Bromocryptine was added to the mix to bring this down. I conceived in 6 weeks. The medical advice is that neither drug causes foetal abnormalities, but in my case, the sheer toll on my system is likely to be the cause of the problems that ensued with the development of the baby. She was born jaundice, without a right kidney, severe hearing problems and a hole in the heart. Later we discovered she had severe intellectual and developmental problems.

Three years on I was fitter and more active. I did pre-conception preparation for about 18 months with Jann. I needed and appreciated this support, especially due to the energy it took to look after my first child. I still used the fertility drugs Clomid and Bromocryptine, but this time the drugs were fast and effective and I conceived after a month. During the first trimester of pregnancy I received acupuncture and took Chinese herbal remedies. Aged 40, I had a healthy child and was not in bad shape.

At 41 I was healthier than I had been since 34. I decided to try for another child, but not worry about medical interventions. I kept charts and noted more fertile mucous than I could recall from my 20s, and timed intercourse when I ovulated. I conceived within 4 months (while breast feeding my second child who I continued to feed during the pregnancy!) and took Chinese herbal remedies during the first trimester and after turning 42, I had a healthy boy.

Moral? I knew my problem was health and hormonal and avoided surgical investigations or implantations. Sometimes you do need help. But in retrospect, for the first pregnancy it would have been wise to be in better health before I subjected myself to the drugs, and not fly in the first trimester. My healthy later pregnancies suggested that fertility could improve even in my forties if I took time for preconception work.”

“My husband and I had been trying to fall pregnant for eight months with no success when I went to see Leah Buhajiar. We were very concerned that we may have serious fertility problems as we were both very fit, followed healthy diets and I thought we had a good understanding of my cycle and were timing intercourse correctly and yet still we had no success. I was slightly concerned as I had an irregular cycle and very painful periods, but put this down to being on the contraceptive pill for over ten years.

From the outset, Leah made me feel very comfortable even when discussing very private and sensitive issues, such as intercourse, my diet and the intricacies of my cycle. Initially she suggested a few modifications to my diet, and after a month, she put me onto herbs to help regulate my cycle. I would leave every session feeling a renewed sense of hope as I started to improve my understanding of my cycle and my periods started to regulate.

After seven months of acupuncture, we discovered we were pregnant and it has definitely been worth the wait. I am currently 19 weeks pregnant and have had a very easy pregnancy thus far. I honestly believe this is due to Leah's help with pre-conception care as I continued to see her every week in the first trimester and every four weeks thereafter and always feel improved energy levels after my acupuncture session.“

Case history

At 41 years of age, Joanne had already experienced two failed IVF cycles; the last resulted in an ectopic pregnancy that destroyed one of her fallopian tubes. As a result she thought that due to her age, her past infertility and the fact that her husband's sperm quality was poor, her only option would be to continue IVF. She came to me to prepare for the next cycle. I have found that conceiving naturally in women less than 44 years is still not too difficult with the right preparation. I also treated her husband for chronic diarrhea and though we did not do another semen analysis Joanne found herself pregnant within five months. She gave birth to a lovely healthy baby girl.

Case history

At 41 years of age, Jen had attempted five IVF cycles without success, using donor sperm. She came to me for preconception work and after six months of regular acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment she conceived naturally using intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm. Jen gave birth to a healthy baby boy and just under two years later at 43 she decided it was now or never to attempt to have another child and after three months of preparation and on her 2nd natural attempt at IUI she conceived and later gave birth to a healthy baby girl. At first, her little boy wanted to know when the babies' mother was coming to get her. I think he has got over that now.

“Jann Mehmet and the Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre had been recommended to me from a variety of sources, including several friends and work colleagues who had related positive experiences to me about their own treatments at the Centre. I initially visited Jann with a couple of health concerns, the main ones being infertility and chronic neck pain after a neck injury 10 years ago; wanting to regulate my menstrual cycle; and wanting to increase my energy levels which had been very low for many years. I had weekly appointments at the Centre with either Jann or Leah for approximately eight months, during which time I had regular acupuncture sessions that were just so beautiful and relaxing. I changed my dietary habits significantly, and now love the changes that were recommended to me. I no longer see the new eating habits as a ‘diet' but as a complete lifestyle change. After a couple of months of treatment my neck pain miraculously resolved, and a year later I am still pain free, something I thought was impossible to achieve! My energy levels increased significantly, and my menstrual cycle improved to the point that I am now seven months pregnant! I can highly recommend the Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre to anyone with health concerns, and the peaceful environment that Jann has created at the Centre only adds to the holistic health experience.“

IVF Support

“Having regular visits to Jann throughout my IVF journey was of immense help on many levels. It was always a positive and calming experience to talk to such an experienced practitioner about what I was going through; I always enjoyed chilling out with the acupuncture and would go away feeling quietened and centred. Physically, I felt extremely well prepared for every stimulated cycle and embryo transfer. Jann supported me through two incident-free pregnancies. I am happy to say I have two extremely healthy miracle children. From despair to joy, Jann was with me every step of the way, and I could not recommend her highly enough.”

Anne
Lindfield

Anne was in her forties during the IVF treatment to conceive her second child. We did a lot of preparation with acupuncture and herbs to give her the very best opportunity to develop healthy eggs and embryos. Studies suggest that if a woman in her forties has embryos that develop to the blastocyst stage she has the same statistical opportunity for conceiving as a woman of any other age group (Jansen et al, 1999). Therefore, the aim of acupuncture and Chinese herbal support for women over 40 in particular is to achieve a good level of general health as well as a healthy menstrual cycle. In doing this we provide the background for both the eggs and embryos to develop potentially as healthily as possible. Whether a woman is working towards natural conception or IVF it is useful to do preconception preparation.

Sperm antibodies - Case history

Sean aged 28 was told by his IVF specialists that he and his wife would never conceive naturally because 100 percent of his sperm were coated in sperm antibodies. After seeing a newspaper article on the clinical trial I was organising, Sean came to see me. Apart from his sperm antibodies and high level of abnormal sperm, he suffered from constant fatigue, poor memory and digestive complaints. I worked with his diet and gave him acupuncture and supplements to improve digestion and the sperm antibodies. Within a few weeks his health improved and his mother in law told me later that he was like a different person.

Within three months, his wife conceived naturally and recently gave birth to healthy twin baby boys. His wife was keen to see if the boys were identical or not, because she found it hard to believe that one sperm got through, let alone two. The babies were not identical twins.

Azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate) - Case history

John aged 37 was told by IVF specialists that he would never father a child because there was no sperm in his ejaculate or in a biopsy of his testes. He was devastated by this news, but decided to do everything possible to reverse this outcome. He came to me wanting to get fit and healthy and wishing to have Chinese medicine tonics and acupuncture treatments that might act as a catalyst to promote sperm production.

My thorough assessment of John found, that there was no family history of infertility and all genetic tests came back clear, however he had experienced a severe infection of the penis when he was six years old that had kept him in hospital for almost a week. I have noticed a pattern of this effecting normal spermatozoa development later in life.

I recommended Chinese herbal medicine over six months and some regular acupuncture. Apart from the azoospermia he also suffered from fatigue, obesity and cold extremities and some digestive complaints. We addressed all these issues and also gave him Chinese herbal tonics for the sperm. John worked with his diet and started to exercise and feel much better than he had done for several years.

Importantly, I recommended for his next testicular biopsy, that he find a specialist who conducted TESE, because there would be less chance of trauma to the testes with a slower but more careful process of finding immature spermatozoa. This is a relatively new procedure in Australia and highly recommended when there is no sperm found in the routine biopsy. The procedure averages three hours, but six month later when John went for this biopsy, motile sperm were found in 20 minutes. On top of this all of his wife's eggs fertilised successfully using ICSI. Unfortunately his wife did not conceive on her first ICSI cycle, so we our now making sure there is no undiagnosed female factor involved. IVF and ICSI will by-pass a male factor, but will not by-pass a female factor.

Varicocele (varicose vein of the testes) – Case history

I had been treating Lauren for infertility with irregular cycles for four months. Her health and cycle had improved enormously so I suggested that she was ready to try and conceive, but we should rule out a male factor. The sperm tests came back with 2% normal forms and low count. Looking at the pattern of the semen sample, I thought a varicocele may be evident and an ultrasound the following week confirmed this diagnosis.

James booked himself in for embolisation, a procedure to clamp the varicocele to stop excessive and over heating blood flow to the testes. The day after the procedure I gave him acupuncture and four weeks later his semen sample on analysis showed 28 % normal forms and more than a triple increase in his sperm count. His specialist was very surprised at the results and had never seen such a good result. Best of all Lauren conceived immediately.

I have found that acupuncture and Chinese herbs alone can dramatically improve the sperm count of men with varicocele. Using acupuncture after intervention, such as ligation and embolisation appears to also improve the results of the procedure by increasing significantly the number of normal sperm.

Miscarriage

Case history

At 37 years of age Sarah came to me when she was trying for her second child. Her first child had been conceived easily and was now 3 years old. In her attempts to have a second child however she had had five miscarriages over a period of a year. She didn't have a problem conceiving but she was recurrently miscarrying. She was under the care of a miscarriage specialist and all possible Western Medicine testing had been carried out with no problems identified. She understandably was starting to believe that she wouldn't be able to carry a baby to term. Following our first consultation I recommended that she stop trying to fall pregnant for 3 months and we work on her overall health as I had identified several markers that were predisposing her to miscarriage.

I felt that her progesterone levels were not stable enough to prevent miscarriage and I had her chart her basal temperature so we could follow this as it improved. I also felt that a prolapsed disk in her lower back that she had suffered a few months previously was also a contributing factor both in terms of the injury itself and also the months of pain medication that had been involved. Sarah strictly followed my dietary and lifestyle changes to improve her overall health and detoxify her body following the pain medication. We did weekly acupuncture sessions and used Chinese Herbs as required, and within 5 months she was pregnant again. This time she did not miscarry.

“I like many other women attempted starting a family after I had established a career. Like my career I also thought I had perfectly planned conception and pregnancy. My miscarriage abruptly brought my plans crashing down with the loss in direction on what to do other than as directed by my doctor to “keep trying”.

It was only good fortune that a friend recommended me to see Jann, as she had a friend recommended her. Jann was able to understand what my body was doing and also teach me to understand it. This and then acupuncture treatment of the cause and not the symptoms. It took several months of preparation during which Jann also taught me to be patient with the process, but it was all truly worth it. My pregnancy and labour were very healthy and problem free, without drugs or medical intervention. Best of all was the arrival of Logan a perfect baby boy.”

Leesa
Sydney

“After being married for a couple of years and being 36 years old my husband and I decided to start a family. I fell pregnant almost as soon as decision was made and everything went along smoothly for the nine months and our daughter Jessica arrived weighing in at a healthy 8 lbs.10 oz.

At Jessica's first birthday I was pregnant with our second child. Things didn't run as easily as the first pregnancy and I lost the baby at between eight and 10 weeks. Another couple of months went by and I was pregnant again only to have an ultrasound at 10 weeks and discover the baby had died. Again we waited another couple of months before trying for a fourth pregnancy. I fell pregnant and lost the baby at about the same stages previously.

Months went by and I couldn't fall pregnant. My gynecologist decided to do tests to see what the problem was. All the tests came back okay and there seemed to be no reason why I wasn't falling pregnant.

After 16 or 17 months of not being able to fall pregnant my sister-in-law Jann asked me if she could help. Jann Mehmet is an acupuncturist and deals in fertility. We started treatment and I was pregnant straightaway. Another 10 weeks went by and I lost this baby as well, Jann asked me to wait a few months before trying again so she could give me treatments to make me stronger.

After waiting a few months I was pregnant again. During the pregnancy Jann kept up the acupuncture and I had some spotting which Jann also kept under control with acupuncture.

The weeks went by slowly and finally on June 14, at the age of 41, I gave birth naturally to a ten pound baby boy who we named Ben. Without the help and support of Jann I am sure we would not have Ben in our lives today.”

Cathy
Jillaby

“My husband and I were married in April of 1996. In February 1997, we decided we wanted to start a family. After 11 months we were finally pregnant. We were so excited that we told the whole world we were going to have a family. On my 12 th week of pregnancy something went terribly wrong, I was sitting at work and I just felt this gush of fluid. As I went to the toilet I saw blood, lots of it. I rushed home and went to my local GP and was told to have an ultrasound, only to be told, ‘we are sorry Madame there is no baby there any longer, you have miscarried.’There was an endless pit in my stomach for months, the pain was terrible. We could not believe after 11 months something like this could happen to us. We lost our baby in January 1998.

In September of 1998, 9 months later we fell pregnant again and this time we were both happy and frightened. Although I thought to myself, surely this could not happen a 2 nd time. Once again at work at 10 weeks of pregnancy I noticed a lot of cramping in my stomach. I felt in my heart something was wrong again. I only had a slight bit of brown mucus discharge when I went home from work and was hoping my baby was still ok. From the ultrasound they told me the baby was only 5 weeks gestation when I should have been 10 weeks. The baby had died and I had carried this child inside me for 5 weeks. I was told that my body had not naturally let it go, so I required a curette, which was a very frightening experience as well. I lost that baby in October 1998.

After all that had happened I had given up all hope that we would ever have a family and the pain in our hearts just kept getting deeper. So I decided that I would change jobs and try to start from scratch and try to leave the past in the past. Although there was not a day that went by that I would walk down the street and see women pushing there prams, I would think to myself, why did this happen to me? My husband and I were still having unprotected sex and we thought if it happens well it will and if not, then it’s not meant to be. Some days were easy some days were like I just wanted to crawl in a hole and die. Some friends had mentioned to me about Jann Mehmet an acupuncturist and herbalist in Chinese medicine. That she treated a lot of women who miscarry and are trying to fall pregnant. Not really knowing a great deal about it I was not too convinced it was for me. One day when I was so depressed about life in general I decided to pick up the phone and give Jann a call.

My first appointment was the following week and I was so surprised just by the first appointment on how much she was able to find out about me with just a few questions and the explanations to why I may have miscarried made more sense than what the doctors excuse was. Jann started me on acupuncture which was painless and we started with the temperature method. Every week I looked forward to seeing Jann as I started to believe there is a chance this is going to work. The encouragement Jann gave every week was just incredible. After six weeks of seeing Jann I found out I was pregnant in August 1999.

I was so excited and scared and I just wanted to grab the world with my two hands and give it a hug. Jann had placed me on Chinese herbs straight away which I took for the first 25 weeks of pregnancy along with acupuncture and Jann’s encouragement. Every day I was worried that something would go wrong. I am now 40 weeks pregnant and just about ready to give birth. I still to this day cannot believe I have growing in my stomach a healthy baby. We are looking forward to our little given angel from God.

At 41 weeks pregnancy I was due to be induced on a Monday night. Now being Wednesday I decided to get some treatment to bring on labour. I saw Jann twice. On the Saturday night, midnight I started to feel some sort of discomfort which was roughly 10 minutes apart. By lunch time Sunday they moved to 5 minutes apart. We went into hospital at 2pm to be told I was 3-4 cm dilated already. We gave birth to a healthy 8.7 pound baby boy born at 12.59 am Monday 23.4.00 with no complications and a drug free labour. Miracles do happen.“

Michelle
Jillaby

Two years later Michelle decided to have another child. She came back for treatments in preparation for the pregnancy. I wanted her to wait a little bit longer this time before she tried to conceive because her fluid retention and tiredness were pretty bad in the first pregnancy. I felt that giving me a little bit more time with the preparation would improve her health during the pregnancy. So for the 2 nd pregnancy she had treatments for 3 months before she started to try to conceive. She then fell pregnant immediately and this time her fluid retention was much less and she was generally much healthier in her pregnancy. August 2003 she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Case history

Jackie had experienced two dreadful miscarriages between weeks 21 and 24. Her obstetrician diagnosed cervical in-competency and recommended rest for the next pregnancy and a stitch in the cervix.

Jackie came to see me before she conceived to gain as much support as possible. We did some pre-conception work before she conceived with acupuncture and once pregnant I gave her acupuncture first weekly, than fortnightly focusing on strengthening the cervix. At 14 weeks the cervix had grown an extra three cm and was looking good. By 33 weeks pregnancy Jackie was starting to feel a bit hopeful and the obstetrician confessed that he did not think she would have made it passed 28 weeks.

At 38 weeks a caesarean section was performed (I don't think any one could wait any longer) and Jackie gave birth to a healthy much loved baby boy.

Case history

At 39 years of age Jo had experienced six miscarriages during eighteen years of marriage. She also only experienced one period a year. My first decision was to help Jo have regular periods and then make sure that she was not at risk of having another miscarriage. Over the years I have noticed that there are clear and obvious markers that show an increased risk for miscarriage. I recommend eliminating these risk factors through Chinese medicine treatment before a pregnancy is attempted especially after a history of miscarriage. This is the basis of our work and study on miscarriage at the centre.

Jo started to get regular periods straight after her first acupuncture treatment. We monitored her cycle for six months and then I thought she was ready to start trying to conceive with minimum risk of miscarriage. On her first attempt she conceived and nine months later gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

Aged 42, she has now decided to try for her next child. Again we will focus on treatments to make her hormone levels and cycle normal to eliminate risk of miscarriage. She now more than ever does not have the time to waste in miscarrying. Once she is at optimum health and all risk factors are eliminated, Jo plans to try and conceive.

Morning Sickness

Case history

At the centre we see many patients that are suffering terribly from morning sickness in their first trimester of pregnancy. Often those with a history of ear infections, sinus infections or allergies are worst off. This is because these allergies and infections can cause long term inflammation and congestion in the sinus cavities and ear canals that create a conflict of signals to the brain about the sensation of movement and balance. This confusion can exacerbate the nausea and vomiting symptoms of morning sickness. At the clinic we use both acupuncture and sinus irrigation techniques to reduce the inflammation and congestion and thus help ease the morning sickness. Ideally we like to work with a woman prior to them falling pregnant to improve these conditions and therefore minimising their chances of experiencing significant morning sickness. We do however treat many women who seek help when they are experiencing morning sickness. We have lots of handy tips in how to reduce these symptoms!

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

“Around November 2006, after trying for a year to fall pregnant unsuccessfully, I came to the Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre to seek help. I was anxious to fall pregnant but I wanted to understand first the roots of my problem. I was 30 years old and after taking the pill for more than 10 years I started to have irregular periods and I was diagnosed with PCOS, which really surprised me. I felt sad and a little bit depressed, and also disappointed with myself, as I had read that people with PCOS hardly ever get pregnant. However, your approach to the problem was to first have a connection with my body and a real understanding of it. Around the time I also discovered I had digestive problems due to a parasite that was stuck in my intestines. I blamed it to a trip I did to the Amazons a year earlier. I all seemed too much to handle, but I immediately felt I was in the right hands after that first appointment where my problems were put into perspective.

One of the things I’ve learnt about the Chinese medicine approach is that the body works as a whole, in synchrony with other parts of the body. As you explained to me, the body needs to feel the right balance between the ‘yin and the yang’. You taught me that the digestive area of the body is related to the reproductive one and that the body needs to nurture itself correctly prior to any fertility attempts. It actually made sense. How I was suppose to create a new life when my guts were suffering and I wasn’t taking the ‘right foods’ to increase my fertility rate? I always thought I was eating healthy, but in reality I was lacking all those proteins that contribute to boost fertility and reproduction.

I immediately started my ‘new eating habits’ with a dose of acidophilus to get rid of the parasite and I combined this with a balanced diet to improve my energy and fertility rate and also weekly sessions of acupuncture. To further my chances of falling pregnant, I was also monitoring my basal temperature on a daily basis. A month and a half after visiting Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre for the first time I found I was pregnant. I couldn’t believe it!! My husband and I were over the moon and I felt this was a miracle. But the happiness of finding out I was able to conceive was shattered when a few weeks into my pregnancy I found out I was carrying a blighted ovum, which meant the foetus never actually developed properly and as a consequence my body miscarried the baby. I felt really sad and disappointed, but at the same time Leah gave me such confidence in my body the there was no doubt I could finally conceive, but it was just a matter of a little bit more time and patience for the right moment to fall pregnant.

After the D&C operation in late February 2007 to remove the blighted ovum, I came to see Leah and she was really caring. She helped me to overcome my sadness and we got back on track. Two and a half months into my weekly sessions with Leah and by May 2007 I fell pregnant for the second time. I had to take two pregnancy tests, as I couldn’t believe that I could fall pregnant that quickly again. This time around the pregnancy was successful and on the 2nd February 2008 my son Dante was born. “

“I stopped taking the pill after 10 years, ready to get pregnant and still had no period after six months. My local GP suggested that I go and see Jann Mehmet. After looking at my symptoms, (no regular cycle, digestive problems, tiredness, bad skin) Jann diagnosed polycystic ovaries. This was later confirmed by ultrasound. Jann worked with me to modify my diet. My energy levels lifted, my skin cleared up and I started to get my period.

I loved the sessions of acupuncture. After each session I felt like I had had a four-hour sleep. The acupuncture helped throughout my pregnancy, helping me to have a calm pregnancy which I'm sure has resulted in a calm and relaxed baby.”

Holly was thinking of preparing for her 2nd child when she wrote this for me. She conceived naturally before Christmas without the need for acupuncture because her health and cycle had remained good as a result of the previous treatments.

“My doctor diagnosed me with PCOS (Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome) 18 months ago and was unable to say why this had happened to me, nor tell me how to manage it. The comment was-you need to lose weight, but good luck, because PCOS makes it difficult.

Jann Mehmet taught me that my digestive system was a mess and the resulting hormonal imbalance created the PCOS symptoms. I've learned a lot about my body and have changed my eating habits, which for me was a real mental hurdle to overcome. Jann provided a lot of support through the process. Now my cycle is normal, the PCOS symptoms have decreased and I feel empowered to manage my PCOS.”

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and polycystic ovaries (PCO) are commonly involved in infertility. This syndrome is always the result of other health problems contributing to its development. These health problems must be diagnosed accurately and treated before the PCO or PCOS is manageable and normal cycles return.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine along with diet therapy tailored to the individual needs and constitution treats this syndrome very effectively. The added bonus is getting your health libido and energy back to normal.

Preconception Care

“I have been seeing Leah Buhajiar at the Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre for less than 12 months. I have been treated for a variety of ailments including balancing my digestive system, regulating my menstrual cycle and assisting in the management of stress and anxiety. I have found the results to be outstanding. I no longer have any digestive problems and I have more energy and vitality. With the help of Leah's advice and skill as a practitioner I have a more relaxed attitude to life and I am now in the process of using acupuncture to support a healthy pregnancy.

The best part of seeing Leah is that I feel I am talking to someone who is interested in all aspects of my lifestyle, including my emotions. Leah aims to treat all aspects of a person in order to achieve good health. I find my weekly sessions incredibly therapeutic. I would strongly recommend Leah and Rozelle Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Centre for all aspects of health. “

RSI or Occupational Overuse Syndrome

“If you haven't learned your keyboard shortcuts, prepare to meet your acupuncturist!

As a result of too much use of the mouse in my job as a graphic designer, I was struck by occupational overuse syndrome (which used to be called RSI or repetitive strain injury) in my right forearm.

I was sent to a physiotherapy practice. A succession of people there worked on my arm, shoulder, neck and back with ultrasound and massage, and I was recommended to rest the arm as much as possible and avoid using the computer.

I had consultations with ergonomics experts who made sure that my workstation was correctly set up. They made adjustments to the positioning of my chair, desk, keyboard, mouse and monitor, all designed to minimise the strain on my body of sitting at the computer for hours at a stretch. After six months it was clear that something more needed to be done: in spite of the rest, and the ergonomics, and the physiotherapy, my arm was still massively sensitive and nearly impossible to use on the computer. I was getting worried about whether I'd be able to keep my job! The doctor prescribed ant-anxiety medication.

It was the chief physiotherapist who suggested that I might benefit from acupuncture. The doctors thought so too, and so I came to be in Jann's hands. I was impressed by the extent of the questionnaire I had to answer on my first appointment, and amazed when Jann used my answers to pinpoint other aspects of me that needed attention. Telling me that the meridian for the small intestine runs through the elbow and that I could not expect my elbow to recover until I'd settle my digestive system down, she pressed my tummy gently but firmly in a particular spot and I yelped…she gave me a strict anti Candida diet to follow. I've been living on whole grains, nuts and seeds, sugar free Soya milk, and lots of veggies and protein. No sugar, no dairy, no alcohol, nothing processed or pickled or preserved... no tea! She also gave me various herbal and Chinese remedies to help build up my immune system. Oh yes, and the acupuncture: very relaxing and surprisingly painless and bloodless.

At the same time the physiotherapist and the doctors sent me off to the gym to build up my cardiovascular fitness and the strain of my muscles (not just back, neck and shoulder but also legs, so as to take the strain of the upper body eg. (When rising from a chair...) Jann encouraged me to keep going with that health building activity. This whole person approach has done wonders for me. I've learned a lot more about cooking, for one thing! No more instant meals. And although I've eaten more than ever before, I lost about a stone (about six kilos) My energy levels are high and I feel much more positive and sturdy, fitter and more able to handle life. I still have to be very gentle with my arm and control how much I do at the computer at any one time. My diet continues and my exercise regime and I'm working fewer hours than I used to and finding time for all sorts of other activities. All in all it seems to have been a blessing in disguise: if my arm hadn't played up I might still be sitting at the computer many many hours a day, oblivious of life passing me by! And I might never have found myself in the hands of holistic healers.“

Sinus and Ear Infection

“This is a problem that is encountered very regularly in clinical practice. From person to person it varies in intensity. Sometimes allergies are involved and often they are not. Traditional Chinese medicine works very well with this frequently frustrating and debilitating syndrome.

If allergies are involved they need to be resolved through diet and treatments. Frequently the person is very tired and needs the infection cleared and their immune system boosted. This is achieved by the combined use of diet therapy, acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies.“

Spurs

“I endured the pain of a heel spur for several weeks which limited my walking and general exercise. It was suggested that I try acupuncture for this very debilitating pain and after two treatments I could walk well and without discomfort. I would certainly undertake further treatment should I suffer from the spur in the future.”
