Acupuncture for Breech Positioning

Acupuncture for Breech Position.

If your baby is in a breech position, acupuncture may help encourage the baby to rotate into an optimal position for vaginal birth. Breech presentation occurs when the baby’s buttocks or feet point downward toward the cervix, instead of the head, which is ideal for delivery.

Treatments to address breech presentation usually start around 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, the baby’s positioning becomes more crucial. Acupuncture, combined with moxibustion (a traditional technique using the burning of mugwort near specific points), has shown effectiveness in encouraging the baby to turn. Studies indicate this method can increase the chances of a head-down position, reducing the need for a cesarean section.

Every pregnancy is unique, and babies may change position on their own. We will collaborate with your midwife or OB-GYN to find the best approach for you. It’s essential to remain open to all possibilities, including additional medical options if the baby stays in the breech position.

Acupuncture offers a gentle and natural way to assist with breech presentation. Many expecting mothers find it relaxing and supportive during the final weeks of pregnancy. If you’re interested, schedule a consultation to explore how acupuncture can support you and your baby as you prepare for childbirth.

Additionally, acupuncture can help manage other pregnancy-related symptoms, like stress, anxiety, back pain, and nausea. This can promote a smoother and more comfortable pregnancy experience.

Research :

2008 Systematic Review by Van den Berg I, et. Al  “The effectiveness of acupuncture type interventions versus expectant management to correct breech presentation”. The review included 6 Randomised Control Trials and 3 control studies that investigated acupuncture vs expectant management. The study found that the portion of breech presentation was 34% following acupuncture treatment compared to 66% in the control group. This suggests intervention with Acupuncture can be quite effective”.
