The first trimester brings profound changes, and often significant discomfort. Acupuncture offers safe, gentle support for morning sickness, fatigue, anxiety, and more.
The first trimester of pregnancy is an exciting and transformative time, but it can also bring a variety of physical and emotional challenges. From morning sickness and fatigue to mood swings and anxiety, many women experience significant discomfort as their bodies adjust to the new life growing inside them.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy during the first trimester when performed by a registered, experienced practitioner. It is particularly well-evidenced for the management of nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). A Cochrane review found acupuncture at the Pericardium 6 point (on the inner wrist) to be effective for reducing nausea in pregnancy, and this is one of the most commonly used points in our first-trimester protocols.
Beyond nausea, acupuncture can support: extreme fatigue and exhaustion, headaches (which are common in early pregnancy due to hormonal changes), anxiety and emotional sensitivity, pelvic and low back discomfort, and insomnia.
In Chinese Medicine, the first trimester is governed by the Kidney system and the Chong vessel (the 'Penetrating Channel'), two fundamental systems that support the early embryo and the dramatic physiological changes of early pregnancy. Our protocols focus on strengthening these systems and calming what Chinese Medicine calls 'rebellious Qi', the upward-moving energy that underlies nausea.
Treatment in the first trimester is gentle and conservative. We use fewer needles, lighter stimulation, and avoid any contraindicated points. All our practitioners are trained in obstetric acupuncture safety protocols.
If you're newly pregnant and experiencing discomfort, we'd love to help. Please mention your pregnancy when booking so we can schedule appropriate time for you.
