Preparing for Labour

Labour preparation acupuncture is widely used in Australia, and many midwives and obstetricians are comfortable with it. Starting from 36–37 weeks gestation, it is a course of weekly sessions through the last weeks of pregnancy.

The research here is thinner than the popularity suggests, and it is worth knowing that before you book. The most-cited Australian data on pre-birth acupuncture comes from clinical audits and observational studies rather than randomised trials, and the reported associations with fewer medical inductions and shorter labours should be read with that limitation in mind. We are not going to promise you a shorter labour or a particular kind of birth.

At Rozelle Acupuncture, our labour preparation protocol follows the traditional pre-birth point sequence. In Chinese Medicine terms that sequence is described as ripening the cervix, encouraging optimal fetal positioning, and building Qi and Blood reserves for the demands of labour. Those are traditional descriptions of intent, not demonstrated physiological effects, and we would rather label them accurately than dress them up.

What patients most consistently tell us they get from it is feeling calmer and better slept in the last weeks, and having somewhere to bring their questions every week as the date approaches. That is a reasonable thing to want.

The protocol typically consists of weekly sessions from 36 weeks until labour begins. We coordinate closely with your midwife or obstetrician and tailor the treatment to your specific pregnancy history and birth plan.
