Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation or cold laser therapy, is an exciting, evidence-based modality now available at Rozelle Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Centre.
LLLT uses specific wavelengths of low-level light to stimulate a photobiochemical reaction within cells, loosely comparable to how sunlight drives photosynthesis but targeted and therapeutic. It is non-invasive, UV-free, and produces no heat or discomfort. Our device is FDA-cleared and CE-marked. Eye protection is used during treatment, and we do not apply it over an area of active malignancy, or in pregnancy, without discussing it first.
How LLLT is thought to work: the light energy penetrates skin and tissue and is absorbed by mitochondria, which is proposed to influence cellular repair, local inflammation and circulation, and collagen and elastin production. That mechanism is well studied in the laboratory. How much of it translates into a given clinical result varies a great deal by condition, and we will tell you where the evidence for your condition sits.
At Rozelle Acupuncture, we use LLLT in several key ways:
Cosmetic applications: used in conjunction with cosmetic acupuncture for fine lines, skin tone and texture, and for conditions such as acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. Results here are gradual and vary considerably between individuals.
Pain and musculoskeletal support: this is where the clinical evidence is strongest, with systematic reviews supporting low-level laser for several musculoskeletal pain conditions. We use it for chronic pain, tendinopathies, joint pain, wound healing, and sports recovery.
Hair loss support: emerging research suggests low-level laser may stimulate hair follicle activity in androgenetic alopecia. The trials are small and the effect modest; we would not want you to expect more than that.
Acupuncture point stimulation: for patients who prefer a needle-free option (particularly children and needle-sensitive adults), LLLT can be used to stimulate acupuncture points. Whether it produces effects equivalent to needling has not been established, so we use it where needling is not possible or not wanted.
LLLT integrates beautifully with our existing acupuncture and Chinese Medicine protocols, offering another avenue for deep tissue healing and recovery.
