Acupuncture for Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV)

One of the most widely recognised uses of acupuncture is for reducing nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. This has been accepted in clinical practice for many years, with a significant body of research supporting its effectiveness. A 2016 systematic review by Gao et al. found that acupuncture can significantly reduce the severity and frequency of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), often improving patient comfort and quality of life during treatment.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points that regulate the digestive system, calm the nervous system, and balance energy (Qi) in the body. Many oncology patients use acupuncture as a complementary therapy alongside conventional cancer treatments to help manage side effects without adding extra medication. There is a significant body of evidence to support this claim (Gao et al., 2016).

Our team also treats pregnant women experiencing nausea and vomiting, both in the first trimester and in cases where symptoms persist beyond the first trimester. While morning sickness is common in early pregnancy, ongoing nausea in the second and third trimesters can significantly affect wellbeing.

Our clinical experience shows particularly good results in reducing persistent pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting through targeted acupuncture sessions. Treatment focuses on calming the stomach, balancing hormones, and improving energy flow to support overall maternal health.

Other Causes of Nausea and Digestive Imbalance

Nausea and vomiting are not always linked to chemotherapy or pregnancy. They can also result from underlying health conditions and nutrient absorption issues, such as:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS),  and blood sugar regulation problems, which may cause digestive upset, loose stools, or diarrhoea. These can lead to anaemia and vitamin deficiencies.

  • Long-term use of acid-reducing medications like Prilosec and Nexium, which are associated with reduced stomach acid and malabsorption of vitamin B12 and essential minerals.

  • Heavy metal exposure (e.g. lead, mercury) which can block the body’s uptake of important minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and zinc.

Testing and Diagnosis for Malabsorption

When malabsorption is suspected, one common initial investigation is the anti-gliadin antibody test, which checks for immune reactions to gluten. However, a negative result does not always rule out malabsorption, especially if symptoms like chronic diarrhoea, fatigue, and nutrient deficiencies persist.

In such cases, further functional testing and a holistic approach — including acupuncture, dietary changes, and supplementation — may be recommended to restore healthy digestion and nutrient balance.
